Could a new Huddersfield currency boost town’s economy?

People in Huddersfield are being asked what they think about the town having its very own currency.

The idea is being proposed by Incredible Edible Huddersfield, a group whose aim is to increase the amount of local food grown and eaten in the town.

Norah Hamill, one of those supporting the idea of Huddersfield’s own money, says it could boost the town’s economy.

She says: “The idea is that if we keep money local, it doesn’t leave the system like a national currency.”

Norah says if she gets enough support from people and businesses in Huddersfield, she will propose the idea to Kirklees Council in the hope that it could become a reality.

Like many towns, Huddersfield used to have its own currency in days gone by and the idea has recently been adopted once again by the people of Totnes in Devon.  Read Article
