Turnaround of man two drinks from death

Former alcoholic Keith Burgess has celebrated the New Year without raising a glass to toast his own success.

The 47-year-old dad-of-four beat thousands of people from across the country to win an award for turning his life around.

He picked up the Star Award for individual achievement from employment charity Shaw Trust for the remarkable way he has made a fresh start.

Keith, from Dukinfield [England], believes he was only a couple of drinks from death when years of heavy boozing had taken its toll and his liver began to fail. Doctors told him he may need a liver transplant.
