Transition Town Canada has a distinctly local flavour

Transition town is encouraging towns across Canada to tap into the collective creativity of their citizens.

A newly formed national group, chaired by Fred Irwin of Transition Town Peterborough, is hoping to provide guidance to towns who wish to ‘transition.’ The steering committee will educate and support communities interested in combatting issues of peak oil and climate change.

Mr. Irwin recently met with community members of Prince Edward County, a “muller” town. These towns, according to Mr. Irwin, are still in the stages of mulling over the transition movement but haven’t yet applied.

Renia Tyminski, co-chair of that county’s sustainability group, was pleased with the turnout saying 60 people came to the event on Feb. 24. Ms Tyminski notes it was nice to see an intergenerational group come out.

“We have had a lot of really positive response,” says Ms Tyminski.

Ms Tyminski, who also works as a teacher, doesn’t want community members with jam-packed schedules to feel as though they can’t contribute.

“It’s about collective intelligence,” she explains, adding that the more people actively participating in the project, the less the workload will be.  Read Article
