‘Spiritual walk’ takes homeless woman across 16 states
Kim Denmark’s “spiritual walk” has taken her almost 3,700 miles, across 16 states in 81 months, but she hasn’t grown weary.
With a steady wind blowing against her face, Denmark, an activist from Dayton, Ohio, crossed into Spartanburg County [South Carolina] Wednesday along the shoulder of a busy stretch of Highway 29 near Lyman.
Armed only with an American flag and a petition signed by thousands of people, she is walking toward Washington, where she plans to arrive on Jan. 20 for the inauguration ceremony of President-elect Barack Obama.
Denmark hopes to address the new president, Congress and the Senate on the need for immediate action to stem homelessness and poverty across the country.
“My goal is to get the attention of the new administration and apply pressure to show them that America’s economic situation needs to be addressed right now,” Denmark said. “I hope that what I’m doing becomes contagious and spreads like a virus, and people get infected with the desire to help. I want to be the change that other people see.”
