Menlo Park group celebrates interaction of art and faith

Careful not to mar a delicate book containing artists’ illustrations of the different names for God, Marianne Lettieri turned each page with a latex-gloved hand.

Looking down at the 94-page book “The Names of God” she commented that the 19 artists who collaborated on the project were engaged in a spiritual task and a having a dialogue with God.

“You really have to go to a different level than just an intellectual pursuit when doing art,” Lettieri said recently. “You’re going into the spiritual.”

Lettieri, of Menlo Park [California, USA], is the leader of the Arts of the Covenant, a community group based out of Menlo Park Presbyterian Church. Formed in 2005, the covenant is one of the few groups in the Bay Area that explore the intermingling of art and spirit.

There are national and international organizations, however, where artists can ask questions of art and faith as well as find encouragement to serve the church and engage the broader culture through their art, such as the Christians in the Visual Arts. Read Article
